This is a more thorough version of the credit card thing. Commands are fleshed out a bit more and less frequent/urgent commands are included.

Commands

ls

List the files in out current directory. Show file permmissions and timestamps with -l

cd ~/public_html

Change the current working directory to your website directory. ~ represents your home directory. NB: this same directory can be accessed in a web browser by going to [WWW] http://www.skynet.ie/~username

cp <source> <directory>

copy <source> to <directory>, can also do directory -> directory with -R argument

mv <source> <directory>

moves <source> to <directory> (also used for renaiming stuff)

clear

clears the current terminal of text

screen

A window manager that can be left running on Skynet even when you disconnect from Skynet. Use Ctrl-a Ctrl-d to detatch from your session from inside screen. Reconnect to a detached screen session using the -rd argument. If you use IRC frequently, please use screen

vim

A text editor for real men. Quit with :q . Learn how to use with command vimtutor

emacs

A text editor for the insane. Quit with Ctrl-x Ctrl-c

Skynet IRC chatroom. Uses the program irssi

man screen

Display the manual page for screen

man -k irc

Searches through all the man pages for 'irc' (useful when you can't remember a command)

/usr/share/docs/

Location of all the documentation for installed apps on the machine

Programming

gcc

Compiler for many programming languages

make

Tool for automating the compilation of many source files

gdb

GNU debugger, used along with gcc above

Networking

ping nonado.net

Ping the nonado.net host to test conectivity

host nonado.net

Discover which IP nonado.net resolves to

traceroute nonado.net

List the hops between you and nonado.net

nc -vz nonado.net 22 80

Check to see if ports 22 & 80 are open on nonado.net

ssh [MAILTO] tyrion@nonado.net

Log into nonado.net as user tyrion

Pipe; allows you to feed the output of one command into another command. IE 'ps aux | grep tyrion' will display all processes on the box and then display only the lines that contain tyrion

Redirect output from command to file. IE 'nethack -s all > ~/tmp/nethackscores.txt' will save the nethack high score table for all users to the file ~/tmp/nethackscores.txt
